چکیده

Feed cost remains the largest portion of the variable costs in swine production. To control feed cost, swine producers or their nutritionist continue to look for alternative feedstuffs. Reasons to include alternative feedstuffs in swine diets might be a desire to improve pork quality, nutrient management, animal health, or animal welfare. The main criterion for successful incorporation of alternative feedstuffs is digestible nutrient profile. This profile is required for diet formulation and will be a main component of an effort to ensure that growth performance and feed cost per unit of output are maintained. Overall, alternative feedstuffs can be divided into two categories: (1) feedstuffs that directly result from crop production and (2) feedstuffs that result from crop fractionation. The latter category has been referred to as by-products in the past, but is currently referred to as co-products. Some comments will be made about each category.

1293 NONRUMINANT NUTRITION SYMPOSIUM : Controlling feed cost by including alternative ingredients into pig diets : A review 1 , 2

Sustained price increases for traditional cereal grain and protein meal feed commodities have forced the pork industry to consider the dietary inclusion of alternative feedstuffs. Crop seed may serve as feedstuffs but their demand as feedstock for human food, biofuel, and bioindustrial products has increased. Together with these products, coproducts such as distillers dried grains with solubles...

Metabolizable Energy in Feeding Systems for Pigs and Poultry

The major consideration in this paper is the suitability of a metabolizable energy system for pigs. For poultry there is no practical alternative since urine and faeces are voided conjointly. The correction to digestible energy of a feedstuff for energy in urine is usually small, but there are circumstances when this may be large. Furthermore there are insufficient data on metabolizable energy ...

Trichinella britovi as a risk factor for alternative pig production systems in Greece and Europe

Trichinellosis is an important zoonosis and the most common source of human infection is meat from pigs and wild boars. The European Union (EU) supports alternative pig production systems (organic and free-ranging) as sustainable farming systems. However, these systems that allow outdoor access for farm animals, may create new or reintroduce old risks to public health. During the last years, al...

Title: Alternative feedstuffs for reducing ammonia and odor emissions in pork production systems and improving the pig‟s gut health – NPB #06-117

Nutrition can help reduce the impact of pork production on the environment and improve pig gut health. The formulation of diets based on highly-digestible feedstuffs and which meet the exact requirements of the pigs, markedly reduces the excretion of minerals such as nitrogen and phosphorus into the environment. The presence of fermentable dietary fiber in the diet can also decrease the emissio...

Effect of feeding fermentable fibre-rich feedstuffs on meat quality with emphasis on chemical and sensory boar taint in entire male and female pigs.

Skatole, androstenone and other compounds such as indole cause boar taint in entire male pork. However, female pigs also produce skatole and indole. The purpose of this experiment was to minimise boar taint and increase overall impression of sensory quality by feeding entire male and female pigs with fibre-rich feedstuffs. The pigs have been fed three organic diets for either 1 or 2 weeks prior...
